4 Must-Try Halifax Coffee Shops

Discover the best spots to sip on Nova Scotia's Capital City, Halifax

While in Halifax, you may find yourself craving a quick bite or a caffeinated beverage. Nova Scotia's capital is no stranger to great coffee shops, here are three to stop in at.

Two If By Sea Café

The original location may be in Dartmouth, but the Halifax location has become quite popular too. Located in the Historic Properties, the café takes coffee very seriously. Beans served here are roasted next door at Anchored Coffee, and Two If By Sea offers a variety of options for coffee preparation—brewed coffee is available in either the pour-over method or in an individual French press if you're feeling really fancy. If you are looking for a bit to pair with your beverage try the crispy and buttery pain au chocolat with the perfect amount of chocolate.

Steve-O-Reno's Cappuccino

Looking for more than coffee? Like a delicious breakfast! Steve-O-Reno's serves up tasty breakfast items (the huevos rancheros on weekends can't be missed), pastries and smoothies from its shop on Brunswick Street downtown. This petite café has been a Halifax institution for more than 20 years. Should you find yourself there later in the day try some of their baked goods such as the new tiramisu squares which have a chocolate crumb base, espresso almond filling and a cream cheese icing.

Uncommon Grounds

Over in the city's south end you will find this coffee stop. Other locations are on Barrington Street and in the Public Gardens. The café's cozy vibe will make you want to settle in and stay a while. Serving up a variety of beans sourced from all over the world, the shop roasts locally in Nova Scotia. Try something unique and order Fog Burner Blend, which is their signature blend. Warning though, this may turn into an addiction but the good news is your can order their beans online and have them shipped to your doorstep. Want to pair it with a yummy treat? Try the scones. They are baked fresh daily with savoury and sweet options—go for the cheddar and herb if it's available.

Coffeeology Espresso Co.

Kim Kay, the owner of Coffeology has trained rigorously in Korea, where coffee culture is hugely competitive. As a seasoned barista who has been in the industry for over two decades, he has made it his mission to popularize pour-over coffee which was wildly favoured in his hometown. Located in the Central Embassy mall with a one-of-a-kind counter, come here for a true seed to cup experience.
