1. History
The Austro-Hungarian Empire of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague viewed Trieste city as their most important Mediterranean Seaport in the 19th century. In fact, they viewed it as their most prized possession due to its proximity to the key shipping route of the Mediterranean. Trieste was a major contention between the Eastern and Western blocs after the Second World War. Today, it is one of the richest cities of Italy with shipping, ship building and financial services being the main sources of revenue.
