Barbados
"Come for the run, stay for the fun". This race lives up to its hype. It starts in Bridgetown in pre-dawn darkness at 5am. From there, you run within paddling distance of the gorgeous beaches along the Platinum Coast to the resorts of St. James, before doubling back to Bridgetown. And then the party begins: runners, their families, friends and supporters all join in the music, entertainment, food and drink, and recover with a swim in Carlisle Bay, or just hang out on the beach.
Boston, USA
The Boston Marathon is a runner's Holy Grail. It's the only major marathon in the world where you have to attain tough qualifying time just to get on the start line. From the start to the rural roads of Hopkinton, the scenic race route undulates through several New England towns before reaching the city and the most infamous climb on any marathon course; aptly named Heartbreak Hill. From there, it's all downhill glory on the finish line with the cheers of half a million spectators roaring in your ears.
Cayman Islands
This is possibly the most laid-back marathon in the world. Starting in the tropical night, runners can smell the salty tang of the sea before dawn eventually breaks over this tiny island paradise. the island is so small that runners have to make two loops of the course; one in the semi-darkness of pre-dawn, and the second under the wilting brightness of the tropical sun. Scrunching tired toes on an idyllic beach after the race is heavenly and makes the pain worthwhile. Or so we're told!
Reykjavik, Iceland
this is an Icelandic experience with nearly 5% of the entire country's population taking part in one of the running events on marathon weekend. Run through the city streets, then beside the sea with glorious views of the ocean, mountains and glaciers surrounding Reykjavik.
London, England
Arguably, the London Marathon is the most magnificent city marathon in the world. It's a stirring experience for a runner: from the start in Greenwich Park, along the Thames, over Tower Bridge to the Houses of Parliament, and finishing at the gates of Buckingham Palace. You'll be in good company: nearly 40,000 runners compete and you need to register early for the entrance into the lottery. You can celebrate with a pint in an old English pub when it's all over!
Disney World, Florida
Not one race, but many. Take your pick from the Walt Disney Marathon Weekend in January, the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend in February, the new Star Wars race in April, or the Disney Wine & Dine race in November.
