Being able to speak the local language of the country you are visiting is one of the best ways for travellers to become deeply involved in the culture. You don't have to be fluent, but just learning basic words and phrases can greatly improve your trip.

Possibly the most popular language learning app. It has a fantastic user interface and covers over 23 major languages including French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and Japanese. The lessons cater to people with a busy schedule by providing short and simple lessons.
Babbel
For people who learn better in a structured environment, Babbel may be the solution most suitable for you. Each lesson takes you through translations, and includes variations of the word or phrase, pictures and whether it's formal or informal. The app also includes native speakers saying the words, helping users with their pronunciation. The 15 minute lessons make Babbel easy to fit into your day whether it's on your daily commute or lunch break.
Busuu
Busuu is a social network for learning languages. Learners work through self-paced lessons, and at the end of each lesson, can practice with native speakers of the language they are learning, in written or spoken conversation.
This app helps connect travellers to a growing community of native speakers. Because of this, each user can learn different languages from its "mother tongue."
AccelaStudy
AccelaStudy has a separate mobile app for each language you'd like to learn. Each app is simple to use, and supports offline use. Different methods of learning are included in these apps, such as flash cards, audio quizzes, spaced repetition, and others.
Memrise
Memrise won't make you fluent in a foreign language, but it's an excellent tool to help beginners build basic vocabulary and phrases. It functions much like a gamified flashcard app, and it offers a lot of content for free.
